A NOTE FROM SAC

The SWMS School Advisory Council (SAC) invites you and your SWMS student(s) to join us for the Student Behavior Focus Group meeting at 6:30 PM on Monday, May 12, 2008 in the cafeteria.  (See below.)  The SAC is embarking on an effort to develop strategies and solutions to promote a more positive school environment and help improve student behavior for next year.  To achieve success, we are seeking the help and support of all stakeholders (students, parents, faculty & staff).

As parents, we need your perspective!   Please join us and give us your ideas and suggestions for ways to promote a more positive school environment, create more pride in our school, and improve respect and behavior among students.

We sincerely hope that you, along with your SWMS student(s), will attend the meeting to share your thoughts, ideas, or suggestions.  Below please find more information about our effort.

Please feel free to email any questions.  Thanks again for your help & support.

Sincerely,

Dolly Ramos, Chairman

Southwest Middle School Advisory Council

Student Behavior Focus Group Background:

During the past two SAC meetings, we have discussed at length the increase in disciplinary actions, increase in student apathy, and overall lack of respectful behavior among our students.  We are very concerned with this readily apparent trend and the resulting negativity that seems to be prevalent on campus.

SAC’s Goal:

Our goal is to help establish a plan to address behavior issues in a more productive way that will begin with the start of the next school year (August 2008).  Obviously with the end of the current school year in sight, this is an aggressive plan.  However, with your help and support, we believe we can develop and implement a program to redirect and improve student behavior.

How can you help?  Please give us your perspective as a Parent at SWMS.

1.       Tell us what major discipline problems you are concerned about on campus.

2.       Let us know what consequences you think are working or not working, and your suggestions to make improvements.

3.       Submit your ideas…   tell us what you think will help motivate students, how we can create pride in our school, and improve respect among our students.

4.       Help us identify the barriers that we may face in implementing a new program and suggestions for breaking through those barriers.

Example:

One of the ideas that we have discussed at SAC is holding a Quarterly Assembly (Pep Rally, Game Show, Student/Faculty Basketball Game, etc).  In order to be invited to attend, students must maintain a “1” in student conduct for each class for the quarter (as indicated on the Report Card), and students must not have had any referrals/disciplinary actions during the quarter.  We need your suggestions for what to do with the students that cannot attend the assembly…

Let’s collaborate to develop strategies and solutions to promote a more positive school environment.  Please join us for the “Student Behavior Focus Group” meeting on Monday, May 12th at 6:30 PM in the cafeteria.

Contact Information:

If you cannot attend, you are welcome to email your thoughts and suggestions to dmramos@bellsouth.net.

Thank you for your help and support.  We look forward to hearing from you!
